What is a radiation shielding door?

A radiation shielding door is a door lined with lead, so it stops X-rays as well as the wall around it does. Hospital Renovation sets the lead to the machine, then fits the track to the weight.

  • 2–15mm Lead in the door: 2 mm for general X-ray, 5 to 15 mm for stronger machines
  • 1,000kg Heaviest door our tracks carry, from 200 kg up
  • Automatic Powered opening on request, so heavy doors stay easy for staff and patients

Inside the door

What is inside a shielding door

Lead runs across the whole door, between two strong skins. It makes the door heavy, so the frame and the track have to be built for the weight from the start.

  1. Front skinWood, aluminium, steel or stainless steel, with an optional lead glass window.
  2. Lead core2 mm for general X-ray, 5 to 15 mm for stronger machines.
  3. Inner frameHolds the lead flat and carries the weight.
  4. Back skinCloses the door and matches the room.

Thai standard

What the standard asks of a radiation door

Thailand's Ministry of Public Health design manual says a radiation room door has to shield as well as the wall, and still let beds and wheelchairs through easily.

  • 2 mm Minimum lead, across the whole door
  • No gaps Joints must shield as tightly as the door
  • No threshold Beds and wheelchairs roll straight through
  • Heavy duty Hardware must carry the weight of the door

Sliding or swing

Two ways to open

Sliding doors open smoothly, save floor space and carry the heavy lead of high-energy rooms. Swing doors are made to any size, in the material and lead thickness you choose.

Questions

Shielding door questions

Last updated 2 November 2026

How much lead does a shielding door need?

Thailand's Ministry of Public Health design manual asks for at least 2 mm across the whole door. We use 2 mm for general X-ray, and 5 to 15 mm for stronger machines.

How wide should a radiation door be?

At least 1.5 m wide and 2 m high in a radiation room.

Should I choose a sliding or a swing door?

Sliding doors open smoothly, save floor space and carry the heavy lead of high-energy rooms. Swing doors are made to any size, in the material and lead thickness you choose.

How heavy is a shielding door?

Our doors run from 200 to 1,000 kg, depending on size and lead. The track is set into the floor or hung from above to carry that weight.

Can a shielding door be automatic?

Yes. Powered opening is available on request, so heavy doors stay easy for staff and patients.

What finishes are available?

Wood, aluminium, steel or stainless steel, with Häfele, Henderson or RADI fittings.

How much does a shielding door cost?

Ask us for a price. It depends on the size, the lead, the finish and whether it is automatic. Send us the opening size and the machine and we will quote it.
